Coffee Facts

In December we had the pleasure of again making our annual trip to Guatemala. Along with visiting friends and enjoying the scenic countryside, sampling coffee was one of our favorite activities.

In Guatemala, the coffee trees are ready for harvesting in December. The perfect weather in the Guatemalan highlands, along with Guatemala's colorful culture and picturesque scenery enhance the overall coffee experience.

The Military On Route 66

The National Historic Route 66 Association provided us with some interesting information about the history of Route 66.

In their words: "Route 66 helped to facilitate the single greatest wartime manpower mobilization in the history of the nation. After World War II, Americans were more mobile than ever before. Thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen who received military training in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas abandoned the harsh winters of Chicago, New York and Boston for the "barbeque culture" of the Southwest and the West. Again, for many, Route 66 facilitated their relocation."

An update from Doc Cody - he is currently in Memphis working with his Blues Band. Seligman was Doc's "home-away-from-home" for a while this past summer when he made his move from California to Memphis.

We wish Doc luck and thank him for the music CD's that he left with us to enjoy.

Vincent Video

According to a press release from Vincent Video, the production of the Route 66 Series is currently being edited. According to Vincent, his 28-episode series will revel in the romance and the mystery of Route 66. It is all about America, our people and our passion. He hopes his Route 66 series will entice potential sightseers and help revitalize American tourism.

When Vegas calls, you gotta accept the charges. Especially now that the Hoover Dam bypass is complete. Our man, Roger, plays tour guide, pointing out some cool attractions and tasty eating joints along U.S. 93, including a couple of them just off Route 66 in Kingman.

Jillian Danielson from Lake Havasu City, Arizona took a photo while at Historic Seligman Sundries this summer that was judged to be a finalist in the Better Photo contest. Jillian uses her backyard of neighboring Route 66 businesses as backdrops in many of her photos.

Czech Republic Adventure Seeker

When Petre from the Czech Republic spent the night in Seligman during the summer of 2009, he told us about his adventure of travelling across the United States by bicycle. Petre emailed us updates which included photos and commentaries as he traveled his dream trip throughout the Americas. After Petre arrived on the west coast, he headed south to Chile and then back up the western coast of South America to Rio De Janiero.

It was a 17-month trip of a lifetime for this young adventurer seeker. Congratulations, Petre!

Grand Canyon Caverns

Both the Grand Canyon Caverns and Seligman love the new Wonder of the World bridge across the Colorado River at the Hoover Dam. What used to be a very long delay traveling from Las Vegas to our stretch of Route 66 from Kingman to Seligman is now an easy, fast 163-mile scenic bonanza. The Grand Canyon Caverns has already noticed a significant number of visitors to their Route 66 attraction as they travel from Las Vegas. The bridge itself is simply amazing and includes pedestrian walkways for perfect viewing and photos of the Dam and Lake Mead.

Christmas in Finland

Now we know that Santa Claus also visited Finland. Our friend, Marja, from Finland let us get a glimpse of their preparations for their traditional celebrations occurring on Christmas Eve.

Coffee Facts

Coffee tip of the month - Grind your own coffee beans. Coffee's flavor comes from the natural oils trapped inside the bean during the roasting process. Once coffee is ground, the oils begin to dissipate. If you grind the coffee the night before to save time, you are getting a less flavorful cup. We grind the coffee beans every time we brew our coffee.

Tommy Martinez, United States Marine Corps

We appreciate the service of our Veterans and support the many citizens of our community that are currently serving in the military.

Tommy Martinez, A Marine Corps Korean war veteran, was an unselfish member of the community of Seligman. Tommy passed away on January 13, 2011. He will be missed by all of us. His big smile and kind words to everyone will always be remembered.

Valentine, Arizona

The history of Valentines Day is obscure and further clouded by fanciful legends. The oldest of these legends is the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration. In 496, Pope Gelasius recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day declaring February 14th to be St. Valentine's Day.

The Route 66 connection to Valentine's Day is the small community of Valentine, Arizona which is a short distance from Seligman. This unincorporated Route 66 community had a population count of 32 in 2000. Here is a Valentine's Day video that includes Elvis Tribute Artist, Arron Philips from the U.K.

Wolfgang Returns

We welcome the return of German Route 66 enthusiast and motorcyclist Wolfgang Werz. His advanced schedule has Wolfgang and his Harley group arriving in Seligman in mid-July, 2011. Wolfgang has a comprehensive Route 66 website in German. This site has attractions, photos and points of interest along the entire Route.

You can follow your heart and be led around by your nose but no part of the anatomy provides such a strong navigational signal as the sweet tooth. Our man Roger has discovered some of the best desserts in Arizona including a life-altering lemon pie and a gingerbread cake made with beer, both just off Route 66. It's a sugary job but somebody's got to do it.

Songs of the Untamed West

Do you want to hear some original songs written and performed by a reknowned Arizona artist? Frank Fara's Songs of the Untamed West is the answer. The website has a special page featuring each song with interesting historic facts and photos.

Billy The Kid Museum in Fort Sumner has adopted one of the songs "Charming Billy - Billy the Kid" as its official museum song.

Austrians

From cold and snowy Austria (their words), we received an update from Markus and Doris. In May we had the pleasure of meeting these smiling Austrians. They signed our Austrian guide book and said that they would return some day. The picture that was sent to us shows the returning (again smiling) Austrians when they showed up a few months later accompanied by their close friends.

Grand Canyon Caverns

New for the Grand Canyon Caverns this year are a series of individual lodging choices called Sky Rooms. The Sky Rooms are in unique and isolated spots on the beautiful treed property for maximum privacy and great night sky viewing without man-made light pollution. This concept was tested in 2010 on several locations over the 800 acres, and it received rave reviews. According to John McEnulty, it's like an East African Safari Camp experience.

Last summer J.W. Cooper ventured across Route 66 to document some of the sights along the road. "Coop" is in the final stages of publishing his artwork which includes a coffee table book, Route 66 postcards and calendars.

Many people photograph Route 66. Every artist has a different display of artwork. We think that his photos give another slant to a popular journey.

American Legion of Seligman

We would like to thank all of the veterans and current men and women serving in the United States Military Services. The local American Legion provides the community with support and is always ready to assist our citizens.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day

In Seligman, we painted our building green for a day.

In Shamrock, Texas, a small Route 66 city between Oklahoma City and Amarillo, Saint Patrick's Day is the biggest celebration of the year. Everyone is Irish for a day and all the men are required to wear a beard.

Recipe for Irish Stew: get some meat, some potatoes and a lot of Guiness Stout. Drink all of the stout. Forget about the stew.

BNSF in Seligman

A familiar sound in Seligman is the BNSF Railroad cars rumbling through town. Their transcontinental route takes these transportation giants alongside Route 66 in Seligman. Gone are the passenger trains and the well known Harvey House which made Seligman a major train depot. Today, besides being popular to photograph, the trains are an integral part of our transportation system similar to Route 66.

Grand Canyon Caverns

We look forward to a new attraction at Grand Canyon Caverns. The Caverns is adding a Laser Light show as part of the Great Regular Tour Experience. This sensory experience with music will add to the legendary Cavern Tour which has been open since 1927. The dark, the lights and the music will add another dimension to this famous Route 66 attraction.

In Seligman, you will find many relics in the form of classic cars, old cars and just neat stuff to photograph. This Ford dump truck does run - with a little coaxing. It is already painted green for Saint Patrick's Day.

Our friend, Arron Philips, from England entertained us in the past as an Elvis tribute artist. He was kind enough to let us use his recording in our Valentine video last month. Arron is a talented singer/performer. We wish him well and hope to see him in Seligman again soon. On Arron's new website, you can listen to some of his Elvis tributes.
