Route 66 Seligman News
December, 2009
Brought to you by:
The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree 2009 has been shipped from its origin in the White Mountains of Arizona to Washington, D.C. On November 30, 2009 the 85-foot Blue spruce will be presented to the United States Congress. This is the first time Arizona has ever given the annual Christmas tree to the U.S. Capitol. This historic project is delivering not only a tree taller than a 7-story building, but nearly 10,000 handmade ornaments and 80 companion trees that will be placed in offices throughout the Capitol Complex.
In October, we wrote an article about Petr Zimola's bicycle trip from New York to San Francisco. The Czech Republic traveler had a "big dream to see the world". We met Petr when he decided to spend the night in Seligman. At that time, Petr said that he might continue his trip to Los Angeles and then maybe Mexico. We have been getting updates from the Czech adventurist. He is currently in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico and heading south. We highly encourage Petr to publish his travel journal. It is refreshing to see an individual follow his dream
and share his enthusiasm for life.

Going Ape Over Coffee

Sumatran coffee plantation workers track the discerning Asian palm civet, a catlike mongoose, that eats only the best coffee beans. The coffee beans he excretes are washed and becomes Kopi Luwak, the world's most expensive coffee blend at over $500 per pound
(2007). The animals gastric juices break down the bitter proteins in the beans, resulting in a sweet, smooth brew. Not necessarily considered as one of the best coffees, but certainly the most exotic.

The official designation of the Santa Monica Pier as the West Coast's end to Route 66 during the Pier's centennial year was developed in partnership with the Santa Monica Convention and Visitors Bureau, Jim Conkle of The Route 66 Alliance, Dan Rice, owner of 66 to Cali, Inc. and the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation. This recent designation's purpose is to acknowledge a commonly held public perception that the pier was the end of the historic roadway, although it had never officially been recognized.
How would you like to visit Rob and Gill in Australia? When we visited with Rob and Gill in Seligman this summer, they promised to send a photo of their 1969 Falcon. On their front veranda is the back end of a 1969 Ford Falcon made into a retro seating arrangement. The lights work on this unique piece of furniture. Gill, thanks for giving our readers ideas for home decoration. All you need now is a Route 66 license plate on the Falcon! It looks like a pretty neat place to sip a cold one and share Route 66 memories.
A tour one hour from Seligman

" Welcome to My Office "

Carol Sales, a California native now calls Arizona home. Carol enjoys the natural beauty of her "office" as she takes you on the
only authentic jeep tour that shows you the Grand Canyon from the top to the bottom. When we see Carol in Seligman with her passengers on their way to the Canyon, we see smiling faces. Carol's a pleasant person who will keep you entertained, informed and provide a safe journey you will never forget. Her enthusiasm is refreshing.

Carol recently had some of her photos sent for publication in
Horizon Air Magazine.
We would like to thank a special team, Rick and Carol Romley, for their contributions to the State of Arizona. Rick served four elected terms (16 years) as The Maricopa County attorney. Although Maricopa County does not include Route 66, his influence in our neighboring Maricopa county which includes Phoenix (the fourth most populated county in America) has a significant impact on our county. He has developed community-based policies that enhance public safety. Mr. Romley also included a strategy that combined tough law enforcement aimed at chronic offenders, and vigorous prevention efforts targeting our youth. We realize that his influence and action has an impact on the communities on Route 66.
Rick and Carol were the honored guests at the recent 234th anniversary of The United States Marine Corps in Payson, Arizona. Rick has received America's Unsung Hero Award and America's Outstanding Disabled American Veteran of the Year Award. He unselfishly
assists veterans on an individual basis.

Colonel William Sahno USMC (Ret) coordinated the events for the Anniversary Celebration.

That is what Silvia presented to her husband, Achim Steppan. Riding a Harley Davidson on Route 66 was Achim's dream for many years. Thanks to Silvia, Achim's surpise on his 50th birthday was a 14-day holiday which included a 7-day Route 66 trip from Los Angeles. After much research, Achim's ride included an overnight stay in Seligman. It was great to share the Germans' enthusiasm and listen to their experiences in Santa Monica, Victorville, Barstow, Amboy, Needles, Oatman, Williams, Flagstaff and The Grand Canyon. They were impressed with the variety of scenery and the open roads as they travelled this stretch of the Route. The "Route 66 Experience" is a two way street. The residents on Route 66 get as much pleasure from meeting visitors as travelers do when meeting the residents on Route 66.

Steppan and Silvia, don't wait another 50 years to return!

Route 66 Bigfoot Update
The search for Bigfoot in the mountains around Seligman continues. The expedition team of three to five people has been on the lookout searching and waiting. Tom Biscardi www.searchingforbigfoot.com has been in and out of Seligman during the past month coordinating various activities and directing his team members. We will continue to monitor all of their events. Animal Planet is scheduled to be in town to film their activites in the near future.
