February 1st, 2010 - Partly cloudy with a high of 45 degrees F (7C) and a low of 20 degrees F (-6C).

We appreciate all the comments that we have received from our readers. Our main focus is Route 66 and the "Route 66 Experience" stories. In turn, we have learned a lot from our newsletter readers about their part of the world through their emails and photos. Thanks for the exchange and for letting us get a glimpse of your country.

Many have asked about past newsletters that have been sent. Jeffery Seligman, previously featured last summer, suggested that we archive our newsletters. This was a great idea. Our newsletters are now archived on our website:

The Arizona Highway Department reported that more than 500,000 out-of-state cars travelled Route 66 in 1937, but Seligman experienced its real heyday after World War II when returning veterans and other motorists hit the road and made the Southwest a popular tourist destination. Seligman's businesses lured travelers along Route 66 with their exuberant slogans, signs, neon lights, and other gimmicks, until Interstate 40 opened in 1978, bypassing Seligman and signaling the end of the heyday of the Mother Road

Seligman Today

The National Register listing of a two block area of Seligman in 2005 as a Historic District focused additional public attention on Seligman and the value of preserving the significant historic resources that illustrate its history.

Washington's Birthday is officially to honor the life and work of the first president of the United States, George Washington. Some people see it as an opportunity to commemorate all past presidents of the United States. Washington's Birthday is sometimes known as Presidents' Day. Some states pay particular attention to Abraham Lincoln, as his birthday was also in mid-February. In the week before the holiday, schools often organize events and lessons to educate their students about the presidents of the United States and George Washington in particular. It is a popular day for stores to start their sales.
Hell, Norway - Partly cloudy with a high of 36 degrees F (2C) and a low of 18 degrees F (-8C).

Many thanks to Cecilie who sent us a postcard from her unique home town, Hell, Norway. Now we know for a fact that "hell has frozen over". Winter temperatures can get down to -4 degrees F (-20C). Hell, Norway, population 352, is the home of the Hell Music Festival.

We hope to see Cecilie visiting us again this summer on Route 66.
We want to share with you a great "Route 66 Tribute" created by the talented Yasuhiko from Tokyo, Japan.

In this video, there are Arizona Route 66 scenes including Seligman. He not only composed the music but also performs his musical talent in the video which is a perfect fit for his photography.

The displayed photograph (taken by Yasuhiko) is a scene of the Tama River, a short walking distance from his house in Japan.

Route 66 to Holland

When Mieke and Wim Wiss from Lelystad, Holland visited Seligman, they were looking for a special souvenir. One of our decorations in the front of the building was just waiting to be adopted. Although we were concerned about the culture shock of leaving Arizona's high desert on Route 66, we decided that "Jim" would enjoy living in another part of the world. Named by his new owners, this proud metal cowboy now provides Mieke and Wim with a perfect rememberance of Arizona's Wild West. The picture of "Jim" shows him standing in the December snow in Holland. In the summer months, he will stand happily amongst the flowers in their beautiful garden. We wish all of the family well

Hiking and Cycling at Grand Canyon Caverns
It's great to have a space big enough to have an adventure with refreshments never more than 1.5 miles away. Grand Canyon Caverns has virtually all 1,400 acres available to hikers, horse back riders and road trail bike enthusiasts. Our place has a perimeter of about 8 miles: most of it in second growth forest last logged in the 1940's with no plans to ever log it again. Our ranch family graze their terrific saddle horses across the whole property at various times of the year keeping everything fire safe and ready for cross country fun without ever leaving the property. Whether you hike, bike or trail ride our paths lead to mesas with 360 degree views of 50 miles or more in all directions. We have an amazing pine forest that covers the whole East side of our recreation property for your enjoyment. We have hundreds of rare plant species thriving in our protected space. Take a break at our store along Route 66 or a mile East at the Cavern's restaurant...Everywhere you go in the distance you'll see our huge water tower at an elevation of 6,000 feet...which is why our forests are thriving. Come enjoy our outdoors before or after a tour of the largest dry Caverns in The United States and sixth largest in the world.

Seligman Yesterday
The presence of Elvis is alive and well on Route 66 according to a Seligman visitor, Bree Reeves, from Las Vegas. Bree, who works at Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, has informed us that Las Vegas is the wedding capital of the United States with over 112,000 couples getting married there in 2009. A popular scenario is dressing up like Elvis and Marilyn Monroe for the ceremony. Newly married couples usually go on to travel Route 66 and visit the Grand Canyon while they are on their honeymoon. Graceland Wedding Chapel was the first chapel in the country to offer the famous "Elvis Ceremony" where Elvis performs during the ceremony. Since Bree has visited Seligman (three hours from Las Vegas), she envisions Seligman as a perfect backdrop for Elvis.

The world's largest replica of the Statue of Liberty, 12 meters high, was unveiled 4 July 2004 in Colmar, Alsace, France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Colmar is the birthplace of Bartholdi, the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty.

The new statue was installed on a roundabout in a commercial zone where it welcomes visitors at the northern entrance to the picturesque Alsatian city, prefecture of Haut-Rhin.

"Dedicated to honoring America's Veterans, Active Duty Military, Police, Fire and Emergency personnel. All are welcome to join us in honoring their commitment."

This is the theme of Richard's Coffee Shop in Mooresville, North Carolina. We had the pleasure of visiting this welcoming center last month. The only agenda for this non-profit organization is to honor our veterans. It was a virtual museum of memorabilia, friendly people and proud veterans.

We salute your efforts.
