We welcome the correspondence from Dries Bessels, writing from Amsterdam. We encourage you to check out his website, http://www.rte66.nl. This is the online publication for The Dutch Route 66 Association. It's great information for your travels on Route 66. His firsthand experience on the road is evident. We look forward to seeing him in 2009. Thanks for educating the Dutch about Route 66 in both English and Dutch.
It was great to meet people like Sue and Pepe Maxwell. We enjoyed the spirit they brought to the Sundries with their musical abilities. We look forward to their next visit. Here is an excerpt from their correspondence:
"We began our love affair with Rte 66 as many others did...by watching the movie "CARS". My husband Pepe originally thought it was just another animated kids movie. But as he was strolling through the t.v. room one day, he heared something about the 'Hudson Hornet'. "The Hudson Hornet was the winningest dirt track NASCAR racer...my Gramma had a Hornet and my Dad had a Hornet," he told our grandson Vin and me. You see, Pepe has a latent NASCAR gene. So when he figured out the CARS storyline...well, he was hooked. The RV season after we saw the movie was our year "to do" Rte 66. And that was the year we met Lynne and Frank. Their 'Seligman Sundries' was closed when we arrived in town, and we were on the move. But we rode the Wing back from Grand Canyon Caverns to buy a Tow Mater T-shirt. We found conversation easy with Lynne, and when she found out our love affair with CARS, she called Frank to ask him to bring Tow Mater to the store so we could have our picture taken on/in 'him'. We left with the knowledge that we had met some very wonderful people."... Sue Maxwell

Have you ever been tired driving long distances? How about driving from the farthest point north in Alaska to Patagonia, at the southernmost tip of South America? Better yet, how about experiencing the trip by bicycle? That is what one of our 2007 visitors is doing. Rin Hayashi from Japan (pictured here) is in Chile as of this date with this goal in sight. He travelled by bicyle through Seligman in 2007. When Rin left our store, we felt he had the determination and physical ability to complete this trip. We wished him well and have followed his progress. Congratulations, Rin, on your accomplishment! Thanks for sharing your inspiring story with us. You can read about Rin's adventure on his website www.,rinrinweb.com.
January 10th update... Rin is 100km west of Santiago, Chile. "Someday I'd like to be cycling whole Route 66, it's one of my dreams." Rin

In the next few issues, we will present some interesting history and facts about our Unites States of America flag.
The flag of the United States, popularly called the American flag, is the official national flag of the United States. It consists of 13 horizontal stripes, 7 red alternating with 6 white, and in the upper corner near the staff, a rectangular blue field, or canton, containing 50 five-pointed white stars. The stripes symbolize the 13 colonies that originally constituted the United States of America. The stars represent the 50 states of the Union. In the language of the Continental Congress, which defined the symbolic meanings of the colors red, white, and blue, as used in the flag, "White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; and Blue, Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice." Because of its stars, stripes, and colors, the American flag is frequently called the Star-Spangled Banner, the Stars and Stripes, or the Red, White, and Blue. Another popular, patriotic designation, Old Glory, is of uncertain origin.
