Frank and LynneOur winter break is winding down and soon we will be re-opening Historic Seligman Sundries after the middle of March. We look forward to seeing you again... if you're in the area, please stop in and say hello. You can bet we'll have fresh gourmet coffee brewing!
As many of you begin to make your travel plans this summer, we suggest you consider staying in Seligman instead of just passing through. We have seven motels locally owned. All are clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. You will find yourself out of the larger urban cities, and it will give you a chance to get a real feel for the "old road". Seligman also offers good restaurants, friendly people and a few good watering holes. Also, Seligman is mid-point between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon and also mid-point between Phoenix and Las Vegas.
We have added some short video movies on our website www.seligmansundries.com . You can also view two short videos we created on YouTube. Enjoy!

Every year in early May, the Arizona Route 66 Association hosts a classic car event for three days. The event starts in Seligman and finishes in Topock, Arizona. More details and information about the 2009 Run Run will follow in the next newsletter.
We found an interesting video on YouTube and want to share it with you! This creation is from Thilo W. Finger. He recorded some good video segments while driving through Seligman. Thilo is from Hannover, the Capitol of the Federal State of Lower Saxony in Germany. The video was taken during his first trip to the U.S.A. Thilo and his three friends stopped in Seligman while travelling from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. We hope to see Thilo and his friends again!! Route 66 News at http://rwarn17588.wordpress.com/ is a clearinghouse of news and events along the Mother Road. This unique website is an aggregate of stories from other sources (newspapers, magazines, etc.) and original material. Ron Wamick is the sponsor of this site. Last year he received The Person of the Year award at the Will Rogers Banquet for his work on this website. Many Route 66 enthusiasts check it daily. We thought we'd mention Ron and his wonderful Route 66 News website to you so that you can also enjoy reading his articles!

In the surrounding ranchland of Seligman you'll discover many wild burros such as the one "posing" in the photo. Wild burros feed on a variety of plants, including grasses, Mormon tea, palo verde and plantain. Although some moisture is provided by these plant materials, wild burros must have drinking water throughout the year. They can usually be seen foraging for food during daytime, except for summers, when they will forage only at night and in the early morning. Many oldtimers say that these burros are descendants of the burros that called Oatman home many years ago.
In the next few issues, we will present some interesting history and facts about our Unites States of America flag. This is the second in our series of articles:
Early flags designed for use in the American colonies reflected the European origin of the colonists. In the British colonies many flags were adaptations of the British Union Jack. The colors red, white, and blue, which symbolized colonial unity, were first used in a flag in New England in 1737. The flag was blue with a white canton quartered by a red cross. In one upper quarter of the canton was a globe symbolizing the New World.
